ASUS TUF FX505DY: Genuine Review after one-month usage- infohub1on1

This gaming series laptop has two variants Exclusively available on Amazon - the 15-inch fx505dy (at Rs 59,990 but available at RS 49,999 on the sale) and the 17-inch fx705dy (Rs 69,990 available around 60K on sale). The unit I’ve purchased is the fx505dy. Apart from the Ryzen 5 3500H, it got 8GB of DDR4 2666mhz RAM, a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive, a Radeon RX560X 4GB DDR5 graphics card, a 60hz IPS nano-edge display and to make this product more beast it has an empty Ram slot as well as SSD slot, and ram can be upgraded up to 32GB of 2666mhz frequency.

I'm going to give you a detailed review of this laptop on the following sections:
➤BUILD AND DESIGN
➤DISPLAY, AUDIO, AND IO PORTS
➤KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD
➤GAMING PERFORMANCE
➤OVERALL PERFORMANCE
➤BATTERY
➤SUMMARY
Now let's have a detailed look at all these components and does it pass or fail or is it the best gaming laptop in the budget of Rs 50K.

BUILD AND DESIGN

Firstly talking about build quality It has got the all-plastic body but according to Asus, it got military-grade certified toughness, frankly speaking, The term "military-grade" is a marketing term used interchangeably with words like strong, tough, intense and high-quality. The Product isn't felt that much tough as marketed but yes it is good because it gives the buyer confidence that letting the laptop slip from the hand from a short height isn’t the worst thing that can happen to it, but of course you won't try this because you have paid 50k for purpose of using laptop not for testing it. The display reveals a great deal of flex, which is noticeable every time it is pulled up or down which isn't good but then again compared to its price it is ignorable.
Now coming to Design it really feels like a gaming laptop, an all-black body with the red logo of Asus on the front is eye-catching to clear the doubt logo doesn't glow. The same red theme is used in various accents around the body, including the lining that runs along the edges of the display, the keys on the inside, and the speaker grilles on the sides and back.
A 15.6-inch matte-finish IPS display with slim borders on all sides except the bottom adds more beauty to it. The laptop feels fairly heavy in the hands but grips firmly when lifted. All things considered though, the Asus TUF fx505dy seems well built and styled for its price.
RATING: 9/10

DISPLAY, AUDIO, AND IO

Talking about DISPLAY it features a 15.6-inch IPS LCD screen with a Full HD resolution and a non-glare matte finish. The display has got a refresh rate of 60Hz which is fair enough comparing the price range. The display is bright and has many customizable options using GameVisual pre-installed on a laptop. FX505 AMD Edition features an ultrafast IPS-level panel for supersmooth gameplay with minimal motion blur. Wide-view technology ensures consistent colors when you’re viewing the screen from extreme angles. Freesync technology helps you in a smoother gaming experience and at this price range which is plus point for this laptop. It has got 5 level of brightness i.e. 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%
RATING: 8.5/10

Coming to the AUDIO section Asus fx505dy comes with two side-firing loudspeakers. Audio is good enough for day to day work like watching movies and listening to music and for gaming as a Gamer, I personally believe using Headphones to get clear footsteps and sound. When the volume is turned to its maximum, the sound produced is loud and clear. I will suggest you to first change the audio setting using Realtek Audio Console. If you are a first-time laptop user then you will not face any issue in audio loudness, in fact, you will be quite surprised after using it. On the other hand, if you prefer headphones, the DTS Headphone:X app on Windows 10 gives sound played through connected headphones a boost in terms of the overall range.
RATING:8.5/10
IO Ports starts with a round-pin power connector port, a LAN port, an HDMI port, one Type-A USB 2.0 port, two Type-A USB 3.1 ports, and a 3.5mm audio jack for connecting headsets and these all have been placed on the left side of the laptop giving benefits to the right-handed gamer’s to control mouse more effectively. There is no USB Type-C port which is one of the drawbacks of this laptop but again seeing its price is forgivable. If you are a photographer and use SD card then you will definitely gonna say no to this laptop because it lacks an SD card slot, an element that’s important for photo and video editing. Purchasing Adapter can solve this problem, I have given the link of amazon from where you can purchase it: Just click on the Shop Now button
RATING:7.5/10

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

Talking about KEYBOARD Asus claims "Exclusive HyperStrike technology ensures more accurate typing and improved ergonomics thanks to a desktop-inspired layout with a highlighted WASD key group, broader space bar, isolated arrow keys, and recognizable gaps between the function keys" this is good but it doesn't go well if you have fast typing skills because a lot of time you may end-up mistyping. If you have medium typing skills then it won't bother you. The Desktop-Inspired red-backlit keyboard has been optimized for gaming, featuring highlighted W, A, S, D keysIn addition, Overstroke technology provides each key with 1.8mm travel distance for improved responsiveness and has an extremely durable keyboard with 0.25mm Keycap Curve that can endure up to 20 million key presses.
It has caps lock indicator, charging indicator, airplane mode indicator and many more.
There a lot of function button which helps you a lot in easy navigation, the one which I personally like is the touchpad enable/disable (FN+F10) button which helps a lot while typing and you can keep your hand perfectly for easy and more accurate typing.
Keyboard brightness can be controlled, either you can completely turn off lights or you can increase or decrease in 3 brightness levels.

The TOUCHPAD on this laptop is not up to the mark when you just tap with a little force it feels like it has been loosely placed, but ignoring this issue it has good looks with red arrow sign on all its corner and left and right buttons divider line that too of red which fits perfectly in Black and Red theme of laptop. The TouchPad is comfortable to use and have multi-finger support. The left- and right-clicks are soft and responsive.
RATING:8.5/10

overall PERFORMANCE

Imagine a compact gaming laptop that punches well above its weight that’s what FX505 AMD Edition brings to the party. It’s powered by the latest AMD Ryzen processor, which has 4 cores and 8 threads capable of speeds of up to 3.7GHZ, it’s not just for gaming, FX505 allows for faster, more efficient multitasking, including daily productivity tasks, surfing the net, and watching movies and videos. Paired with Radeon RX 560X graphics, you can rest assured that FX505 AMD Edition is up to the task, inside and outside the gaming arena.
Using that empty Ram Slot and SSD slot makes this Laptop performance to an extreme level. For Gamer's upgrading ram to16GB and using nvme M.2 slot is recommendable for more smooth performance. By installing Windows to nvme M.2 SSD will give you high performance than 1TB hard drive having 5400rpm which is much slower.

On our CPU and GPU benchmark tests, the Asus FX505DY secured decent scores. On PCMark 8s Conventional Creative test, the laptop scored 3538 points. In 3DMarks Fire Strike and Sky Diver tests, it scored 5521 and 15422 points respectively. The Seagate 1TB hard drive on the FX505DY review unit allowed the laptop to score only 104.9 and 73.93 MB/s on CrystalDiskMarks sequential read and write speed tests respectively.
For CPUID-CPUZ test I have attached the pics below, you can go through this:
CPU DETAILS
MEMORY DETAILS
SPD DETAILS
INTEGRATED GRAPHICS RADEON 8
DEDICATED GRAPHICS RX560X

The overall performance of this laptop was not bad. It can handle everyday applications like Chrome, WhatsApp for PC, File Explorer, Word, OneNote, and PowerPoint without any fuss. Heavier applications like Lightroom too worked without any major lag. Switching between applications across multiple virtual desktops happened quite promptly save for the occasional stutter in animation. The FX505DY was slow to boot Windows 10, launch games and applications, and open files because of the 5400rpm hard drive.
RATING:8.5/10 (upgrading its Ram and SSD makes it 10/10)

GAMING performance

I haven't tested many games on this laptop so I'm including a review from www.digit.in and  their test has the following outcome:
"The Asus FX505DY gets discrete graphics in the form of an AMD Radeon RX560X GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM. The review unit ran our custom test suite of video games rather decently at 1080p on Medium and High (defined as one level above Medium in any game) graphics settings. Doom, Crysis 3, and Battlefield V ran the best on High settings, with the Doom and Battlefield V average frame rate hovering around 40 frames per second. In Medium settings, the average frame rate touched 62 on Crysis 3.
On the other hand, Apex Legends, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Shadow of the Tomb Raider ran poorly at 1080p and on High settings, with the average frame rate barely crossing 14 frames per second on any of the three games. Turning the graphics settings down to Medium gave all three games a bump in frame rate by about 5 frames per second. Bringing the resolution down to 720p while keeping the graphics settings at Medium had a positive impact on Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The game ran at a playable frame rate of around 36 frames per second.
All the games tested took about two minutes to complete launching, be it from Epic, Origin, or Steam. Resuming gameplay from the last saved checkpoint too took over two minutes to happen. In my opinion, the hard drive is to be blamed for this bottleneck in overall loading speed. Even otherwise, the FX505DY can’t be considered as the first choice for fresh titles by experienced gamers. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Crysis 3, there was visible screen tearing during action scenes and cutscenes whether the AMD Radeon FreeSync setting was set to “AMD Optimized” or “On”. Metro Exodus, for one, refused to run altogether after the title sequence.
On the plus side, the temperature of the CPU package and the area around the keyboard and exhaust vents stayed well in check. At no point did the temperature cross 50 degrees Celsius. This is quite a remarkable achievement, especially for a gaming laptop. However, the noise from the dual internal cooling fans exceeded 69 decibels during the full load inside a quiet conference room. To sum up the FX505DY’s gaming abilities, you can play modern game titles on the Asus FX505DY as long as you don’t have a lofty frame rate or graphics quality expectations from your mid-range gaming laptop. Game titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is best played in 720p on Medium graphics settings".
RATING:8/10

BATTERY

The battery on the Asus FX505DY is 48 Watt-Hours having 3 number of Lithium-Ion Cells, and coming to real-time battery backup it hardly lasts for 3-4 hrs, not more than that and hence is on the lower side even for a gaming laptop. Enabling WIFI and the screen brightness set to 75%, the laptop performs decently in mix usage like web browsing, photo editing, typing, and video playback. And for Gaming, no one recommended you to play games on battery backup because it really decreases the performance and consumes more battery and it hardly lasts for 1 hrs. To play Games smoothly please change battery/power consumption to HIGHER PERFORMANCE because it will automatically activate your dedicated graphic card and enables turbo mode. One thing to notice that on turbo mode it makes a lot of noise and sometimes it feels more irritating but if you play games using headphones than it will not affect you anymore or I can say it won't bother you. Battery drainage is too fast and to overcome this problem I don't know which technology they are using but it takes a maximum of 1 and 1/2 hour to fully charge the laptop which is quite interesting.

Coming to conclusion it is the best you can get at 50K and apart from the physical and hardware, it offers a lot of interesting features that no other laptops have at this price range like free sync technology, wifi hotspot, wifi auto connects works perfectly without any issue any many more. So if you are planning to buy a new laptop under 50k then go for it, its a value for money.

  11. In this changing world it is hard to answer your question because of introduction of new tech daily, but I'm sure for nxt 2 years you won't face any problem, all you need to do is just increase your ram and add ssd. one thing to remind that you have to connect it with charger while designing and video editing work to gain full power of this laptop.
