I read various posts daily, they focus on long posts i.e. quantity rather than quality. So I will try to make this as short and simple to understand as I can.
Make Blog UI (User Interface) Simple & Professional
The first thing every beginner should keep in mind before starting a blog is deciding the Topic. In technical terms, it is called choosing a niche. It means on which topic you are going to make a blog. Take a pen and paper and try to write more than 100 headings/titles. If you got 100 titles related to that niche then go with your niche otherwise move to the next one.
Beginners Problem or Mistake while Starting a Blog
Publish your articles related to that particular niche only. It has been seen among the beginners that they make a blog with title technology and they publish articles related to study, food, business, fashion, etc. which is not good for SEO. It is hard for the search engines to find your article and crawl in search results. Combining various niches will create a negative impact on your users/readers and there is a high chance that he will never visit your site again. So be focused on your niche as it is the very 1st step of SEO.

Make your mindset at the beginning that whether you want to show ads on your blog or not. If yes, then your focus should be on qualifying for the AdSense program, and for this, you have to write your post unique and having more than 600 words per post. There are many sites that will give you a platform to create your blog for free like WordPress, Blogger, Wix, and many more but if you are starting a blog for generating some income then go with Google Blogger.
If you are going with the free option then choose Google Blogger. You can only apply for AdSense by Using Google Blogger for free, not from any other free service providers like six, WordPress, and so on.

Avoid Copy-Paste Work
After creating your blog now its time to publish your self-composed post/articles. The most important thing as a blogger to be successful in the long run is getting rid of copy-paste work. Just take some information or ideas from other's site posts, don't copy their work. Make your article unique, if you copied their work and by any chance, they got to know about this they can claim their Copywrite content and you will have to face trouble. AdSense income may affect and your overall SEO ranking will decrease and your blog will never get high traffics in the future.
